There's no place like home...There's no place like home...

Finding the right new home is so important to the transition you are facing. It will make all the difference now and in the future how this new chapter of your life develops. It is important to know as you are doing your search a key element in finding the right home for you is how will the community assist you in the transition of life. One of the questions to ask yourself is what will happen to me as I age. If I move in as an independent resident and due to health issues that may arise I now need assisted care or dementia care what will become of me? If you live in one of the CCRC campuses in town...of which Riverview is one, all the care you could ever need is at hand and waiting in the wings to help in all stages of aging.

The following 2 videos highlight two of the living options at Riverview Retirement Community. The first one is of one of the rooms in the Terrace.

This next video is of one of the cottages. It is owned by Shirley a very active lady who enjoys not only the privacy and independence of her cottage, but also all the amenities of the community. She takes comfort in knowing that as she ages and if her living/ health situation declines she has the option of moving into a new housing situation right here at Riverview. For her this is true peace of mind and why there really is no place like home!

Riverview is alive with the sound of music!

The following two videos clearly display how important music is to our well being. And because of this there is a strong emphasis on music at Riverview Retirement Community.

The first video is of a group of residents who joined together in one of the many community areas on the campus and sang songs of days gone by. Enjoy!

This next video is a group of dedicated Riverview terrace and Village residents who come together
to practice their skills. Together they make up the amazing group titled Riversong. This group performs all over and are in high demand. I was delighted to watch this rehearsal of an upcoming show. They are full of energy and joy. Watch till the end so you can see the lady with the happy feet!

One of the common elements the retirement communites I have stayed with share is the importance of having activites that not only stimulate the mind but ones that will enhance the residents live. After staying with the folks here at Riveview I can honestly say they take it to heart here in this community....and they do it with a song!

Let's talk turkey!

I feel it is appropriate to talk about food since we are right in the middle of the holiday season. What better time to talk "turkey"! No discussion would be complete with out me sharing with you my thoughts about the dining experience I had during my stay at Riverview Retirement Community. Of all the places I stayed this year I think Riverview ranks very close to the top in both the food served and the service given. Each day I was delighted to see a fresh breakfast bar and salad bars at both lunch and dinner. They were all full of various items that were fresh and enjoyable. In addition to this choice there were always multiple entrees available on the menu. I was  fortunate to sit at several tables during my stay and each table had warm wonderful people to enjoy my meal with. These folks many having lived here for upwards of 10+ years could not say enough of the ease of their life at Riverview.

As I mentioned Riverview ranks high on my list of dining choices and much of the praise must be placed on Pete, the Executive Chef. Pete, who has enjoyed a 30 year tenure at his post oversees a staff of truly caring professionals who daily serve their residents with love and care. I can not say enough of this well oiled machine and the folks that work here.

Introduction to Riverview Retirement Community

I spent a week with the wonderful folks at Riverview Retirement Community. While I was there I shot several videos of the grounds and the community. The following 3 videos display a beginning glimpse into live here at Riverview Community.
Below is a short video of the garden area. This area is a wonderful safe place for all the residents to enjoy. It is fenced and has access to all areas of the community.
This video shows a bit of the Terrace and the common areas.

Stay tuned for further updates about my stay at this wonderful community.

Final Thoughts from Broadway Court Estates

After spending a week with the wonderful folks at Broadway Court Estates I have nothing but wonderful comments about this community. It is family owned and operated and it shows. The owners are very hands on and on a daily basis they come in to keep up on things. When I spoke with the residents they had nothing but praise for the owners. This community is a fully independent building. The folks that live here are very active and enjoy activities that accommodate their needs, from swimming to dancing and everything in between there is plenty to do here. The dining room is a pleasant experience and full of wonderful conversation as we enjoyed well thought out menus and excellent executed meals. The staff is friendly and helpful and clearly devoted to the residents. If you are an active senior you really do not want to miss out on an opportunity to stay here at Broadway Court Estates!

Final Concert of the Year

The week I stayed at Broadway Court Estates happened to also be the final patio concert of the season. About 100 residents gathered to hear a great fiddle concert. There was wine, beer and treats served under the light of special tikki torches. The large patio is the perfect summer gathering place. There are often parties here on this lovely patio which is situated next to the indoor pool and the residents flower gardens. A wonderful evening was had by all as we enjoyed the close of another summer and a chance to look forward to the coming fall.

Wonderful grounds

As I strolled around the grounds here at Broadway Court Estates I am struck with the great pride that is visible everywhere I look. Not only by the owners, which is so very evident; but also by the residents. I was amazed by all the gardens. As you watch this video make sure to notice all the individual gardens. At the beginning of the growing season the residents who desire put their name in for a plot. Some are raised beds and some are traditional plots of earth. Whichever type they ended up with the devotion to their gardens come through. I was fortunate enough to get a tour with, Bob Garwood, a very passionate resident who has several plots. His harvest is used for his baking. It is not unusual for Bob to make the staff pies and other home baked treats from his garden. The staff and residents love it and Bob enjoys his new found gift for baking. Just another way the residents here stay active and involved. Now here is the video...

Crafts

One of the great things about Broadway Court Estates is the quality of dedicated women who get together to design, build and host the October Craft Sale each year. I have a short video of some of them working and some of the items them have made for the sale. This sale was last week end and the proceeds benefit the community. They are able to purchase special items around the building. For example they purchased a curio cabinet for the hallway to display some collectibles. In addition items the buy the proceeds also go to support the craft room and keep it full of the supplies they desire. It gives them an endless supply of projects and it is clear they take a lot of pride in all they are accomplishing...and justifiably so...just watch and see.

Line Dancing at Broadway Court Estates

What I found wonderful at this community was the varied activities and the level of involvement of all the residents here. They have everything from gardening to various exercise classes, card games, movies, special outings and every Tuesday they have line dancing classes. You have to watch this video showing the excited die hard line dancing fans who come out each and every week to fine tune their skills. Some of them have been doing this for 10 years...now that is devotion. Loved watching these ladies. Wonderful energy here at Broadway Court Estates!

First Night at Broadway Court Estates

I was welcomed here with a tour and an introduction to many of the staff members; many of whom I will be talking with this week. I was very impressed with the facility and all the amenties that are here in the 118 room community.  As always I will be talking with key people here as well as some residents in an effort to discover what life is like here.

The short video I have attached shows the room I am lucky enough to be staying in with Willie. The one thing I did not mention in the video is the room has its own washer and dryer. This is a wonderful feature as many of the communties I have stayed in do not. Please watch the video and imagine how now it would be to live in an apartment like this. More to come...

Final Thoughts from The Waterford

After spending a week with the folks at The Waterford I am struck with one revealing word LOVE. What I felt was a true sense of love for the residents who live at The Waterford and also the love each staff member shows the residents who they care for.  In addition to this I felt the love the staff has for their jobs. I spoke to so many staff members who shared with me how honored they are to be working at The Waterford.  This was displayed from the wonderful severs in the dining hall to Kelly one of the housekeepers all the way up to Jeff the CEO. Time and time again I heard what a great place The Waterford is for working. It really is a community of workers who serve with a servant’s heart and residents who gratefully accept this gift of love.
I highly recommend The Waterford Touchmark.  Now sit back and watch this video of Jeff 's thoughts as to why The Waterford is a wonderful community.

The library at The Waterford

This short video explains how so many of the activities at The Waterford are resident driven. The staff actively seeks out the hopes and opinions of the residents and helps them find ways to full fill their needs.

Lori the Health and Fitness Director

Enjoy this great video about the fitness department here at Waterford. I was lucky enough to participate in my first Tai Chi class. I have to admit some of the other class members displayed better balance than I did. ;) It was a wonderful way to start the day.

Betty: Life Enrichment Director

Enjoy this interview with Betty regarding the life enrichment program at The Waterford a Touchmark community. She discusses how events in the community are resident driven. What I observed is that because of this the community residents are extremely involved and excited. Watch and learn!

Willie's Moment: He is a STAR!!

Willie loves it at the Waterford Touchmark!

So many people have welcomed him and come to pet his soft head. It seems there is not a soul at the Waterford who does not like to pet a soft Golden Retriever. As we go to leave in the evening for our walk it takes 30 minutes to get out the door. There are residents coming down the hall that heard he was here and they ask us to wait. It turns out he is quite the draw. Willie loves nothing more than to snuggle up to someones leg and have his head rubbed. When one resident is done he goes to the nest. I have always believed it was Willie's calling to be a therapy dog. It looks like my trek around town to visit retirement communities is fulfilling this in his life. While bringing joy to the folks that live here he is experiencing the gift of sharing his warmth and comfort with those around him. It melts my heart to see the reaction between Willie and the residents. After our stay I can assure you, Willie will be back to visit...he loves to stay in touch with his friends.

A welcome from The Waterford

This video represents how new residents to the community are greeted and made to feel welcome. These two ladies co-chair the welcoming committee and along with the rest of the the committee go out of their way to make people feel right at home. Betty and Virgina two lovely ladies working hard to make a difference in the lives of those around them.

Day one: Waterford a Touchmark Community

I shot a short video about my first day here. What I did not include was my initial observations of the people who live here. I met some wonderful, warm people today who were willing to share some of their personal thoughts about life in general and specifically here at Waterford. At both lunch and dinner the ladies I spoke with shared how important your attitude is to your happiness and contentment. In their heart they believe strongly there is no reason not to be happy here. They shared how anything you might desire is available to you. They talked about the importance of not getting stuck in a rut and thinking that nothing is good because the person you are hurting is yourself.  I know this may sound simplistic however if you think about the context of it being our first meeting and the fact these insights came from 3 women in their 90's it seems worth mentioning. We all know attitude is everything but how wonderful that even in your 90's people are making the conscience decision to wake up every day on the right side of the bed!

Final Thoughts from Rockwood South

As I sit here and ponder all I observed and learned during my stay at Rockwood South I realized it felt like a well oiled machine. There was not a single item that did not impress me. The staff shows a true passion for what they do..ask me about the stability of the staff. Most of the management have been here 10 plus years. Alan, the CEO of all three Rockwood campuses has been here for 20 years. Rockwood South boasts a 50 year legacy of outstanding service and caring for the residents who have chosen to live here.

As I strolled the 90 acre campus it seemed there was not a flower out of place. Everything was beautifully landscaped and is all done by the staff who clearly take pride in their jobs.
The south campus features 165 homes. The tower for the independent residents, assisted living and dementia is home to 400 folks. I was so pleased to see this community that welcomed me and happily showed me with great pride their lovely homes.

It is clear to me and anyone who spends time here that a feeling of excellence in every aspect of this lovely community is fostered by staff and residents a like. They opened their arms to me and I can't thank them enough for all the special efforts they took with my stay. You owe it to yourself to check it out!

Dessert at Rockwood

On the evening of July 18th I was invited to the beautiful home of Betty and Steve H. They had a special dessert party they put together with Candance and 6 other residents at Rockwood. The dessert was a fabulous array of sweets assembled by the Chef at Rockwood South. I am not sure which was more amazing the dessert or the wonderfully stimulating conversation between the folks that were gathered to share their thoughts and feelings with me why they enjoy living at Rockwood South. They all live in the independent homes. Mark, Dan, James and Joan all shared their stories that were unique to them. Most of them felt one of the reason they gravitated toward life at Rockwood is the accredited status...the only one between Seattle and Minneapolis. To them this was a huge factor. Also, important is the not for profit status and the Foundation that gives the residents a safety net. This foundation assures that if your funds are depleted...due to no fault of your own, you will never be asked to leave your home. This gives all the residents an amazing source of comfort. And another factor that sets Rockwood apart from many communities is that they are a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).  What this means to the folks who live here is they can completely age in place. When living in a CCRC  if your health declines and you need to transition from independent to assisted living or dementia care it is available and you will not have to move to a new community. This gives them and their families true peace of mind.
I had such a wonderful time listening and sharing with these generous folks about all the reasons they chose life here. It is clear they love the life they have chosen. Yes, they have downsized from their long time family homes, but the benefits of living in their new community far out weighs the things they gave up. They now enjoy true peace of mind and easy living here at Rockwood South.

My tour with Candace

I had the privilege of receiving a private tour of the Rockwood South Hill Community. We began our tour in the beautiful modern lobby which is adjacent to the elevators and library. Across the lobby is the grand dining room where all the fabulous meals are served by a great group of caring young workers. The dishes are prepared and coordinated by the communities award winning French Chef.

As we continued around the building I was struck time and time again how all possible measures are taken to offer every amenity to the residents. Some of the highlights are lovely welcoming lobbies on each floor. These lobbies are used for casual gatherings and also for floor resident meetings. Another rare opportunity for residents at a retirement community is to have the space and option of doing hobbies they have loved in the past. For example, one option is the woodworking shop at Rockwood South Hill. The folks who enjoy this hobby have the opportunity to work in this fully equipped workshop. They can work alone or on a community service project. Currently they are working on wooden toys they donate to children's groups in town. What a wonderful way to stay active and to give back to the community they love!

As my tour continued and we left the independent living community, we entered the assisted living and dementia floors. The wonderful observation for me here is there is virtually no difference in features or decor from one floor to the next. As I walked around I observed that from area to area special care is taken to protect the residents by keeping them comfortable and safe while still giving them the lovely decor of the rest of the building..

Everywhere I roamed I was delighted to see both residents and staff busily going about the duties of the day with a refreshing attitude. I saw happiness and a true passion for being exactly where they are at the moment.

My tour was completed after seeing the Forest Estate independent homes and the community building. The homes consist of numerous floor plans and lot sizes. One of the wonderful features of many of these homes is the way they are positioned on the lots. Often they back up to private green space with trees and wetlands spanning the back yards of their homes.  The community building is equipped with a kitchen area that always has refreshing drinks and fresh cookies. If you you are seeking a bit of exercise this is where you will find both a weight room and a full size indoor pool. There is something for everyone here at Rockwood South Hill. Come check it out for yourself I am sure Candace will be delighted to share the community with you as well!

Kim, the Activity Director at Rockwood South Hill

Here is an enlightening video with Kim. She does an amazing job in her role at Rockwood South Hill. Listening to her and learning about her passion for the folks at Rockwood it is no wonder she captivates the residents. Rockwood South Hill has an unbelievable high rate of participation in all the activities.

I spent an hour one afternoon in the main lobby with a dozen folks playing Mind Aerobics. After feeling like I was being challenged mentally I soon realized once again how sharp the residents are here at Rockwood South Hill. They had the answers to the mind teasers long before I did. Kept me on my toes.

Now sit back and listen to Kim share why she loves what she does so much...

Day Two: Rockwood South Hill Campus

Another wonderful day at this community. So many things to share and so many wonderful people I have met. I will have more to post at a later date, but for now here are two videos. This first is from Brenda who is the Wellness Director. This woman has a true passion to help the residents here live the best life they can. She does this with a series of programs she has developed and she shares some insights in this video.

This second video is from a lady at met who lives in the community. She lives in one of the homes and shares how she feels about this wonderful community. I will be writing more about the private homes and the different levels of care here at Rockwood South Hill in a later blog. For now here is Sue...

I hope you enjoy these videos and learn some of the unique amenities available here at Rockwood South Hill. Tomorrow I will be speaking with Kim, the activity director and her how she goes about her day. Stay tuned to see what I see.

Final Thoughts from Maplewood Gardens

When I began my journey of visiting different retirement communities in Spokane I was excited about what I would find. Each month I have found myself in a different place enjoying a new culture. So when I walked into the lobby of Maplewood Gardens I was struck by the caring staff. What I found as I was shown around the community is a friendly and loving atmosphere. It became apparent to me that everyone knew everyone else. It really was like one large community, a family of sorts. People caring and sharing their live with those who live close by.

Many of the staff and residents have been at Maplewood Gardens for up to 20 years. As I shared in previous posts this is always a good sign of the care that is given. I believe it is in large part from the management that has been in place for years...make sure to watch the video of Karen, the Executive Director it truly spotlights what I am talking about.

Maplewood Gardens is the perfect place for many folks. I recommend that if you are considering a move here or to any other community that you should spend time there. Have some meals, take part in activities, sit around and get a feel for the place. This is a wonderful non-intrusive way to decide if it is the right community for you or your family member. I learned a lot during my stay at Maplewood Gardens and one of the many things I discovered is...as they say in their ad...Maplewood Gardens is a wonderful place to be!

Keri the Caretaker!!

This is a must see. Rarely do we encounter someone doing their job in such a joy filled manner. I watched her all week and was so impressed I felt compelled to hunt her down and ask her how she keeps her spirits up and is able to life the spirits of the residents at Maplewood Gardens. This community is fortunate to have her work with them. Watch and see what I mean!

Resident Isabella

Watch this video with Isabella a resident here at Maplewood Gardens. She shares with me how she enjoys her life here and how she feels about the care she receives.

Executive Director Of Maplewood Gardens

This is a great interview with Karen who is the E.D. here at Maplewood Gardens. She has a fantastic longstanding staff. I was lucky enough to get the chance to speak with her about her philosophy of service to both her residents and staff alike.

Maplewood Gardens Room

This is one of the residents rooms at Maplewood Gardens. It clearly shows how comfortable you can make the space. Thank you Marcia for allowing me to come and video your room and share what a nice homey space you have created for yourself!

Maplewood Gardens Avitivity Director

Watch this video to hear about the philosphy behind the way Sharon does her job at Maplewood Gardens. It is a very thought provoking video and worth the 10 minutes. If you or your parents are considering a move to a retirement community the activities should be an important element in your choice.

Maplewood Garden Introduction

Watch to hear a bit about where I am staying this week...follow me to see why people love living here at Maplewood Garden. Please excuse the pauses in this videos.

Final Thoughts from Rockwood at Hawthorne

Here is a great interview I had with Tina, the Marketing Director at Rockwood at Hawthorne. She shares with me the philosophy of the staff in her community. I believe this clearly reflects the warm and caring community that I was fortunate enough to be a part of for a week. I highly recommend this community as a place worth checking out.

Willie and the garden

Here is a video showing the wonderful garden/ grounds residents can enjoy at Rockwood at Hawthorne. During my stay I was able to see how carefully the grounds and the building are maintained by the staff. There are plenty of places both inside and out to stroll and enjoy the view. Great for both the mind and the body and spirit!

The wonderful staff!

A story about my stay at Rockwood at Hawthorne would not be complete with out a mention about the special staff the residents are able to enjoy. They are a true team put together by the excellent staff of Rockwood Retirement Communities. This mention does not only include the management who I believe to be some of the best Spokane has to offer, but all levels of skill. I was able to talk to and observe everyone from the maintenance...who kept the community shining, to the servers who kept the residents full and satisfied. Everyone from the front desk receptionist who was so welcoming, to the  patient transport in the dining room who conducted their job with true care and empathy.

All the servers at the many meals I enjoyed...and boy were they tasty... were so kind and caring. It seems they never tired of the constant running back and forth for another requested food item. They gently and patiently took care of the dining needs of the residents in their care. Of all the servers who I encountered I would be negligent if I were not to mention Elaine. What a woman! She is the lone server who  cares for all the needs of the residents at breakfast. And she does it with ease and grace. It is obvious to all that she loves what she does and she is loved in return. She watches over  all the diners and makes sure they have their needs met with a true smile and pat on the back. Each resident I spoke with shared with me how they love her and appreciate so much the care in which she handles her duties. We should all be so lucky to have her touch our days like she touches the community of Rockwood at Hawthorne. Elaine you make a difference!

One final thought I would like to share regarding making the choice of what community to live in regards the length of the staffs employment. Make sure to enquire how long management has been in the building. Very often the tenure of the staff reflects how the community is managed. If there is a high turn over it often reflects the way ownership handles the community. I can assure you the staffing at Rockwood at Hawthorne is stable, strong and consistently available!

Tuffy...What an inspiration!

During my stay at Rockwood Hawthorne I met many wonderful people, but no one stood out to me more than Tuffy. I spent a fair amount of time taking with this amazing man. He shared with me many of the adventures his life has taken him on. I was lucky enough to learn about his times as a saw mill consultant and how even now he is actively working/ consulting on the details of a project he is involved with in Brazil. He is so involved he will be traveling to Brazil with his associates to work on the details. Tuffy is a true inspiration to me because not only did he live an active life while he was younger...even fought with General Patton, but to this day he continues to share his wealth of knowledge with those around him. When asked how he likes living at Rockwood he responds with a resounding "Love the people. They take great care of all our needs" He retains his spirit, energy and outlook I believe by continuing to stay active and involved. Meeting him was a true highlight of my stay.

Day Three...an interesting insight

Last night I ate dinner with Betty. She shared with me a realization she had years ago before she moved into Rockwood. Her entire adult life she had been told by friends and family when events in life occurred she should get whatever she wanted because as they said to her "you deserve it" So she set about buying "things" to help her through issues in her life. It could be a happy event or the saddest when she lost her husband that would spur on the purchase She would turn to the things in her life to find peace and fulfillment. Every one always told her it is OK to have it because "you deserve it". She shared with me about coming home one day and looking at everything she had accumulated. What she said she saw was a house full of "I deserve its". At that moment she realized all of the "I deserve its" she owned were really no more than things. She set about releasing herself of the burden of all the stuff and found a true sense of peace to replace it with. She now lives here at Rockwood Hawthorne surrounded by the items and memories that truly mean something to her. Betty finds comfort in knowing the things she looks at on a daily basis now really mean everything to her.

Day two...some observations

After a restful night in my wonderful room I woke to birds chirping outside my window. After taking Willie for a walk around the grounds I went to breakfast. Today I enjoyed my meal with 4 lovely talkative women. Two of them are recent residents and the other two have lived here for years. Margaret (not the one I wrote about yesterday) has lived here with her husband for 8 years. They moved in together and until recently had a nice 2 bedroom unit on the second floor. When he fell ill and could no longer be on the second floor he moved to the the health care area and she moved to the first floor. She shared with me how she appreciates the fact that no matter the situation the people here at Rockwood have helped transition the couple to whatever new living area was needed. She finds comfort and security in the knowledge that they will never be asked to leave regardless of if they run out of money. Yes, you read that right! The Rockwood communities will let you stay even if your funds are fully depleted. This is a rarity in the industry and needs to be applauded.

The other ladies at the table were in different stages of transition into the community. One came from a small town North of here and feels like it is a great fit for her. She is active and happy with her choice. It seems in the six short weeks she has lived here she has made many friends and keeps doing all the things she wants. She appreciates having the staff here to help her as needed, but enjoys the Independence of being able to do for herself as she is able. One of the ladies moved in 3 months ago and although she is happy here she is having a more difficult time adjusting. She shared that she was not quite ready to let go of her house and so she still misses it dearly. However, she is already very involved in the actives and is making many new friends.

Once again I am struck by the family that develops among the residents in the community. Everyone is checking on each other to make sure they have come down for breakfast or gone to the exercise class. It has to be a reassuring feeling to know there is someone watching out for you.

It was heartwarming to hear the banter and humor among these ladies. They start their day together around a large table discussing world events, classes they are taking and books they have read. And they are left with  the feeling of true caring and lasting friendship and yes; a new and different type of family.

Lunch today.

I was fortunate enough to be able to sit with a past client of mine named Margaret. She is doing well and we enjoyed the chance to catch up. Margaret is very happy at Rockwood and says the staff all take very good care of her needs. I remember when she moved here about 4 years ago and although she was open to the move there was a bit of fear and uncertainty about what life would be like. I have gone to visit her over the years and have been so pleased to see how well she has transitioned into her new life at Rockwood. From the first time I met Margaret until now I have always been so impressed with how she takes such pride in her appearance. Her make up is always perfect and her hair consistently styled in the way she likes. Even today she looks great and she shared with me during our lunch the name of the lady who does her hair at Rockwood. So guess who I am making appointment with to have my hair done! I will let you know how it goes. More later...

Day one...my room

Check out the new room I will be staying in this week. Very comfortable room with a great view of the courtyard. Kathy

The Good Samaritan Community Center

Check out the wonderful center that Good Sam has for all the residents. It is a well thought out and vital area of this community. They have everything from balance exercise classes to line dancing to special dinners. This community has a strong focus on the activities of its residents and make every attempt to evaluate the needs of each resident and have programs for all levels and desires.

Activity Director Good Sam

Here is the video from Carol Ann and her amazing philosophy for her residents care. Listen to how she goes about her job on a daily basis.

I spent the morning with Carol Ann and 6 of her residents in an exercise class. This was not your typical sit down class, but there was strength training, balance, some yoga, weight work involved. It was a lively group of highly motivated folks. Really enjoyed the class!

One week later...

Wow! It has been one week since my last blog. I so apologize to the wonderful people at Good Sam. I had a few personal issues that came up this week that slowed down the processing of my observations and the videos I accumulated last week. My mom had a major medical issue that I needed to help with and my daughter decided (or maybe I should say my new grandson, Parker)that it was the week for him to be born. All is great now beautiful baby born and mom is on the mend. So now on with the show...

I will be uploading the installments on a daily basis just as if it was happening now. And again I would like everyone at Good Sam to know how I appreciate their warm welcome and how fabulous they all are! Kathy

Hi everyone,

Wow it has been a couple of very busy days here at Good Samaritian Society. When I arrived and got situated in my room I was given a full tour of the building. The tour was conducted bya very warm and passionate, Jacki Schmick the Housing and Marketing Director. She made me feel very welcome and showed me all the Independent Living areas, Assisted Living and Critical Care. I was lucky enough to meet many of the the staff members who were so full of love for what they do. It is obvious the passion they all share for this retirement community and the people who live here.

This building was built in 1972 and has 79 independent living apartments situated on 4 floors. They range from 1 bedroom apartments to suites with 2 bedrooms, living rooms and a den area. Very nice and roomy. The building has a wonderful territorial view. Because the building was built in 1972 there are not any large common areas but what they do have on each floor is a nicely situated living room area. Each of these areas have been decorated by the residents of the floor so they reflect the true feeling of a home environment. They are all special and unique.

I have also noticed that Carol Ann Christnact. the Leisure Services Director must work on full throttle all the time. She has some wonderful activities. Yesterday they had line dancing in the Community Center. (more about the center later) I was also lucky enough to take part in Mind Aerobics. There were about 9 residents taking part along with myself and 2 staff members. Basically this is trivia. Not my best game. Especially when pitted against 9 85-90 year old sharp witted women. I must admit I was impressed. The activities are varied and facilitated by a staff of people who are having as much fun as the people who live here.

Things I will cover in the next installment are the Community Center, the unique pricing and dining structure and any other exciting thing I come across. Stay tuned!  Kathy

Things I will cover in the next installment are the Community Center, the unique pricing and dining structure and any other exciting thing I come across. Stay tuned!

Stay tuned!  Kathy
